Extensions Aren't A Natural Movement

Think about how hard it is to lift your leg into a high extension and hold it there. Now think about how easy it is to lift your arm overhead and hold it.

One feels almost effortless. The other takes everything you've got. There's a reason for that — and once you understand it, you'll see why practicing your extensions over and over was never going to be enough on its own.

Try this—

Lift Your Arm. Now Lift Your Leg.

Raise your arm above your head and hold it there. Easy, right? You could probably stay like that for a while without thinking about it.

Now lift your leg into a high extension and try to hold it. Within seconds it's heavy, it starts to shake and it wants to drop. You grip, you hike your hip, you fight to keep it up.

Same idea — lift a limb up high and hold it. Completely different difficulty. So why is one so easy and the other so hard?

The reason—

Your Arms Were Built To Go Overhead. Your Legs Weren't.

We evolved over millions of years to lift our arms overhead — so we could throw, climb and pick fruit from the trees above us. Reaching up is something the human body was shaped to do.

But this was never true for your legs. Nothing in our history asked us to lift a leg high and hold it there. Honestly, it's a miracle we can lift our legs this high at all.

So don't feel bad if your extensions aren't where you want them yet. It isn't a lack of talent or effort — it's just not something your body was designed for.

The problem—

Why You Can't Just Practice Your Way Into It

This is why, unlike climbing or throwing, a high extension isn't something you can simply practice your way into.

Repeating développés at the barre, again and again, asks your body to perform a movement it was never built for — without ever building the body that can perform it. So the leg keeps landing at the same height, and keeps dropping when you try to hold it.

To get high, controlled extensions, you need to train your body for the extreme physical demands of extensions. That comes down to four things:

Targeted strength01

Strength To Lift Your Leg — And Hold It There

Lifting your leg high takes strength. Holding it there takes even more — the ability to keep your leg in position against gravity, second after second.

Your arm barely needs it. Your leg needs a lot of it. That strength doesn't come from stretching or from repeating the movement — it has to be trained specifically, in the muscles and positions your extensions actually use.

Active flexibility02

Range You Can Actually Control

Flexibility still matters — you need range to reach a high extension. But there's a difference between passive flexibility, the range you can reach with help, and active flexibility, the range you can reach and control with your own muscles.

In the centre there's no hand, no barre and no partner holding your leg up. Extensions need range you own actively — and that has to be trained on purpose.

Core-hip alignment03

A Centre That Lets Your Leg Rise

A high extension doesn't come from your leg alone. It comes from your core and hips working together — a stable, aligned centre that lets the leg rise freely.

When that connection is missing, you end up forcing the leg up instead. Hips hike, shoulders tense, the standing leg grips, and all that effort goes into fighting yourself instead of lifting higher.

Stability training04

Steady On One Leg While The Other Goes Up

Every extension is performed balanced on one leg. While your working leg lifts, your standing leg, hips and core have to keep you completely steady.

Without that stability, even a strong, flexible leg will wobble, drift or drop. Stability training builds the solid base that turns a shaky extension into a controlled one.

The solution✓

Effortless Extensions

I'm a dance strength and conditioning coach who's spent over 10 years helping dancers transform their extensions — and I know just how hard perfecting the extension is.

That's why I built the Effortless Extensions training plan: to give you a body that can turn an impossible, unnatural movement into an effortless and graceful one.

It trains everything your extensions demand:

Targeted strength to lift your leg and hold it high.
Active flexibility so you control your full range.
Core-hip alignment so your leg rises without compensating.
Stability training so you stay steady on one leg.

Every exercise is built specifically for extensions — without making you stiff, bulky or tight.

It's already been used by thousands of dancers to create powerful change in their extensions in just 6 weeks, and it only takes an hour of training a week. And right now, it comes with my Arabesque & Penché course, completely free.
