About me...
Hi, I'm Monica - a former professional dancer who became obsessed with the parts of training the dance world consistently gets wrong.
Growing up dancing, I never had a naturally flexible back. Which sounds strange, because I'm hypermobile. But that's exactly the problem, when your body is hypermobile and lacks the stability to control that range, it protects itself. The standard advice was more stretching, more passive flexibility work. None of it worked. What I didn't know then was that my body wasn't refusing to bend, it was bracing, because it didn't feel safe to let go.
It wasn't until I started understanding the spine as a system, building genuine strength and control alongside mobility that everything changed. My backbend deepened. The discomfort disappeared. And I realised that what had been holding me back had nothing to do with genetics and everything to do with how I was training.
After my dance career, I dedicated the last 10+ years to understanding exactly why so many dancers struggle with their backs and what actually works to change that. The dance world is decades behind other sports when it comes to spinal conditioning, and dancers are paying the price in restricted backbends, chronic tension, and overuse injuries that never quite resolve.
I created Beautiful Backbends because I've seen the same story play out hundreds of times: dancers who stretch religiously, stay consistent, and still feel like their back is a ceiling they can't break through.

However, if you’re recovering from an injury, it’s always best to check with your physio or healthcare provider before starting. Absolutely! The program comes in three levels: Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced, so you start exactly where you are. Each level progresses every 2 weeks, building in complexity as your mobility, strength, and control develop. Every exercise also comes with written regressions and progressions, so you can adapt the training if something feels too easy or too challenging on any given day.

Absolutely! Most sessions take just 20–30 minutes, and the program includes 2 workouts per week, each one carefully designed to target the structures that matter most for a deep and healthy backbend. You'll focus on spinal mobility, thoracic and lumbar flexibility, and the surrounding strength work that builds control, stability, and genuine range. You'll also get clear guidance on how to integrate the training without overloading your back in the "How to Use This Program" section.
Not much! You'll need 2 yoga blocks (4 for the advanced level), a long resistance band, a cushion, a chair, and a set of light weights (water bottles work just fine). That's it, everything can be done at home or in the studio, no fancy equipment required!
Most dancers start noticing real changes in 3–4 weeks with consistent practice: things like a deeper, more controlled backbend, less tension in the spine after class, and greater ease in extensions and port de bras. Long-term flexibility and strength continue to develop over time, but this program is designed to build those improvements week by week, with a clear, structured approach that targets the exact structures behind a safe, beautiful backbend.
